Topeka, Kansas Repeals Domestic Violence Law

As ThinkProgress previously reported, decriminalizing domestic violence has been deemed a cost-cutting measure as the City Council and district attorney have both been unwilling to foot the bill to prosecute abuse cases. Several victims of domestic violence spoke against the proposal at the Tuesday meeting. “It is your responsibility to protect these people, and you’re failing,” one said. According to the New York Times, 18 people have been arrested on domestic violence charges since September and released without charges because no agency is taking responsibility for prosecuting new cases.

The long-term effects of the back door institutionalizing of domestic violence is unlikely to save anyone anything. The community’s health care cost will go up. As the violence escalates – and it will – the cost to prosecute attempted murder and manslaughter will dwarf prosecuting assaults and battery. There will be related issues with juvenile justice if there are children in the household. Some people are being penny wise and pound stupid. More here – Topeka decriminalizes “light” wife-beating. Even the Omaha Police Department agrees that low-level incidents tend to escalate if there is not some intervention at the early stages,

The abuse can take several forms. It can be physical, emotional, sexual or economic. The abuse may be destruction of property or pets dear to the victim. It may be the victimization of the children or even the threat of suicide on themselves.

Battering tends to begin with verbal abuse, unreasonable jealousy, and/or pushing and shoving. It is likely to become more serious unless there is some type of intervention. A battering incident is rarely an isolated occurrence and the abuse/violence tends to escalate in frequency and intensity.

Domestic violence is a vicious cycle and affects thousands of people every year. It is important that victims are knowledgeable of the warning signs and have access to the community resources available to them.

News of the weird, strange, bizarre, violent, woefully ignorant and sadistic: Former Mathematician, Federal Reserve official and current conservative presidential hopeful Herman Cain Proposes Electrified Border Fence

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.

The ever popular Michelle Malkin blog chimes it,

I have not had the pleasure of reading so much pro sadistic death snark for a while. Mean while, Rush Limbaugh on Lord’s Resistance Army: “Obama Invades Uganda, Targets Christians”. The LRA has committed just about every atrocity one can imagine including butchering and raping women and children. Their leader, the butcher Joseph Kony has claimed he is the holy leader of a Christian “Ten Commandments” movement. Rush like them because they are anti-Muslim. And of course Rush likes them because Obama is against them.

With these two very recent examples of conservative sensibilities in mind this gem from a popular right-wing site called Weasel Zippers drips with dark irony,

The logic here is rock solid. The American Nazi Party finds some shaky common ground with OWS and a-ha, they are one and the same. Some other tweets from the ANP that for some reason Weasel Zippers did not post,

The Right has taken to occasionally called President Obama a Nazi. The ANP thinks Obama is in league with the OWS and the Jews who supposedly control Wall Street. Using our patented Weasel Zipper logic it has to be one or the other, Obama is a Nazi because the ANP likes the OWS or he is not because the ANP hates Obama. The comment section is filled with some of the craziest convoluted connections, historical fallacies, gross and illogical oversimplifications I’ve read, well, since the last time I visited a conservative Republican website.

Just as there have been different iterations of socialism, there have been various iterations of fascism. Hitlers’ was partly consumed with ethic purity where Mussolini’s was not. That said the two did have a lot in common in terms of how they saw the individual and society:

[Fascism stresses] the necessity, for which the older doctrines make little allowance, of sacrifice, even up to the total immolation of individuals, in behalf of society…For Liberalism, the individual is the end and society the means; nor is it conceivable that the individual, considered in the dignity of an ulitmate finality, be lowered to mere instrumentality. For Fascism, society is the end, individuals the means, and its whole life consists in using individuals as instruments for its social ends. – (Alfredo Rocco, “The Political Doctrine of Fascism” (address delivered at Perugia, Aug. 30, 1925); reprinted in Readings on Fascism and National Socialism, pp. 34-35.)

Fascism is definitely and absolutely opposed to the doctrines of liberalism, both in the political and economic sphere. (p. 32) – “The Doctrine of Fascism” (“La dottrina del fascismo”) is an essay written by Giovanni Gentile, Benito Mussolini, 1935, “Fascism: Doctrine and Institutions”, Rome: ‘Ardita’ Publishers. Mussolini published the sentence, but most historians think that Gentile was the actual author.

The Rise of the Regressive Right and the Reawakening of America

They’d like to return to the 1920s — before Social Security, unemployment insurance, labor laws, the minimum wage, Medicare and Medicaid, worker safety laws, the Environmental Protection Act, the Glass-Steagall Act, the Securities and Exchange Act, and the Voting Rights Act.

In the 1920s Wall Street was unfettered, the rich grew far richer and everyone else went deep into debt, and the nation closed its doors to immigrants.

Rather than conserve the economy, these regressives want to resurrect the classical economics of the 1920s — the view that economic downturns are best addressed by doing nothing until the “rot” is purged out of the system (as Andrew Mellon, Herbert Hoover’s Treasury Secretary, so decorously put it).

In truth, if they had their way we’d be back in the late nineteenth century — before the federal income tax, antitrust laws, the pure food and drug act, and the Federal Reserve. A time when robber barons — railroad, financial, and oil titans — ran the country. A time of wrenching squalor for the many and mind-numbing wealth for the few.

Listen carefully to today’s Republican right and you hear the same Social Darwinism Americans were fed more than a century ago to justify the brazen inequality of the Gilded Age:  Survival of the fittest. Don’t help the poor or unemployed or anyone who’s fallen on bad times, they say, because this only encourages laziness. America will be strong only if we reward the rich and punish the needy.

Mr. Reich might be correct on the turn of the 20th century in terms of the economic way-back machine. In terms of culture and science some of them would seem to prefer some time pre-Enlightnment. That is a generality. I realize that there are Republicans who believe in science and they see how it’s connected to quality of life for everyone, in addition to obvious payoffs in terms of an economic impact. There are a minority of progressives who have some weird ideas – about vaccines for example. One of the easily discernible phenomenons that split the con/liberal divide is that conservative politicians clearly have to meet the anti-science litmus test to be a political candidate. That litmus test is not so rigid across the aisle.
