Why think. In the U.S we have the tough guy or grizzly mom think with your gut, go with your instincts and damn those fancy intellectual fact based charts school of behavior. The think with your gut mentality has a world wide distribution. It tends to be more romanticized in Europe. In the recent Cold Souls (2009) the mysterious Russian soul in celebrated over the Russian mind. Africa still has a wealth of poetic creation stories. They are deeply felt, but require more in the way of verbal tradition than thinking. Wouldn’t biological or cultural evolution weed out the kind of thinking which doesn’t work. It does work. Not being completely rational and not requiring justification works all the time. Abe looks at a puzzle thinks it through and still the gift doesn’t fall into the prize tray. Marie takes a baseball bat, cracks the case open and grabs a prize. Marie now has her reward, achieved without thinking. A few weeks later she and her friends are still making fun of Abe for over thinking instead of acting. Marie’s approach to life has some immediate rewards, but what if everyone starts thinking with their gut like Marie. Abe could apply a combination of his rationalism with Marie’s technique and next time he let’s her take a prize, but saves himself some trouble by taking Maries’. Abe’s second solution is not much improved over Marie’s but it is an intermediate transition. Once he thinks about it for a while he realizes the crimes are adding up and maybe the best approach is to hone his puzzle solving skills. breaking other people’s property and stealing have normative consequences and not very good ones. Marie is part of a minority of go with your gut types, but since it is the only way she knows, she is results oriented and rarely considers consequences, she continues to embrace her world view. That makes things kind of tricky for the Abes of the world. They would like to act on their gut feelings occasionally, abet mediated by thinking, when to comes to some activities, but want to live in a thinking based culture.
This is about where evolution, biological and moral, has brought us. It is also not as simple as the thinkers versus the go with your base instinct school. Most of us lean one way or the other, but live according to both paths. One of the qualities which wisdom is supposed to impart is learning which to rely on and to what degree. Going with your gut have save you in primitive physical conflicts, but wont’ be much help on your math test, inventing a flying machine or even in your relationships. Even in the most primitive situation, short of annihilating one side completely, some rational resolution must eventually be found.
Dipstick clowns to the left and right. First from the actual left. We have to put in the qualifier since “conservatives” are so willfully moronic on the difference between political theories – Welcome to Censorship in the 21st Century – Hugo Chavez shows us how it’s done.
Clearly, Producción y Distribución Venezolana de Alimentos (PDVAL), the new state-owned food-importing conglomerate that Chávez had touted as an antidote to the iniquities of capitalist grocery shopping, is catastrophically mismanaging distribution. Cobbled together from the remnants of recently nationalized food companies, PDVAL’s government-appointed managers have neither the experience nor the training to keep 28 million people supplied with food. The results have been devastating: rising food prices, deepening shortages of key staples, and rows-upon-rows of rotting food containers sitting untouched as people find it increasingly hard to complete their weekly shopping.
On TV, the image of these containers would have been politically explosive. The story may even have had some traction on the radio. But the scandal is getting very little coverage through these popular outlets, and there’s been no public outcry to speak of.
Why? Because Chávez has ingenuously focused his censorship efforts on the broadcast media.
And from the Right, America’s very own smiley-faced fascists – Massive Censorship Of Digg Uncovered
A group of influential conservative members of the behemoth social media site Digg.com have just been caught red-handed in a widespread campaign of censorship, having multiple accounts, upvote padding, and deliberately trying to ban progressives. An undercover investigation has exposed this effort, which has been in action for more than one year.
“The more liberal stories that were buried the better chance conservative stories have to get to the front page. I’ll continue to bury their submissions until they change their ways and become conservatives.”
-phoenixtx (aka vrayz)
The Digg escapade would be more a de facto censorship brought about by gaming the Digg votes. Nevertheless, a combination of sick and haplessly pathetic behavior. The conservatives not only buried stories about politics, but about economics, science, the arts, entertainment and anything else that didn’t meet their litmus tests. If changing people’s minds were only that simple. They did accomplish one ironic goal – for people who claim to care about entrepreneurship – they have given an entrepreneur’s site and social application a black-eye.
