I appreciate the role a nuclear arsenal can play in serving as a deterrent against adversaries. But Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota may not appreciate the notion of a proportionate response.
“If in fact there is a nation who is compliant with all of the rules ahead of time and they’ve complied with the United Nations on nuclear proliferation, if they fire against the United States a biological weapon, a chemical weapon or maybe a cyber attack, well then we aren’t going to be firing back with nuclear weapons,” Bachmann said. “Doesn’t that make us all feel safe?”
“No!” shouted the crowd of thousands in Minneapolis.
Steve zeroed in on the cyber-attack element of Bachmann’s bizarre speech (Sarah Palin was also at this event in which a Bachman-Palin presidential ticket was discussed). From what I’ve read about DNS attacks many of the computers used are hijacked via worms and used by attackers that are often times thousands of miles away. So if Bachman’s infected computer and IP address is identified as being part of the attack she might not object to sacrificing herself to a small tactical nuke for the sake of her country, but the other residents of Minnesota that would be obliterated might not be as prone to such nihilistic behavior. As for the biological and chemical weapons – we could, just for fun say, start retaliation using conventional weapons, using something that would provide Bachmann and her cheering fans tons of bang for the buck, such as a Daisy Cutter a 15,000 pound (6,800 kg) bomb with a blast radius of 300 to 900 feet/100 to 300 meters or perhaps a Grand Slam, a 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) earthquake bomb with a blast yield of 6.5 tons of TNT . Those that prefer their bombs to be high-tech could go with a cruise missile without a nuclear warhead. If Bachmann was say eight or even 12 years old one might want to comfort her or even consider bringing in a child physiologist to help her through her precocious fears, but as she is not a child, such fears are mental bed wetting. We have a shortage of jobs in the U.S. not assorted fun armaments to wreak devastation.
Libertarianism has become the last refuge of conservative economic policy. Yea see the real problem was not the policies it was the way they were implemented or we’ve never really tried the good true and pure policies of conservo-libertarianism. Tea baggers – who are mostly Cons – have largely embraced this combination of deflection to avoid blame and to create the new improved brand of the same old thing except next time they’ll add less salt and more baking soda – The Church Doctrines of Pope Ron Paul – What’s wrong with libertarianism?
