Science: Naturally Occurring Molecule Helps to Prevent Panic

A ligand, or binding molecule, of the translocator protein (18 kDa) seems to quickly counteract anxiety and panic attacks in mice as well as humans—and without the negative side effects associated with other current remedies, researchers say. This finding suggests that this ligand, XBD173, might be a good candidate for use as a safe and fast-acting anti-anxiety agent.

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and can be very disabling, frequently turning into chronic clinical conditions. Current treatments like benzodiazepines often have unwanted side effects like sedation, tolerance, or symptoms of withdrawal after chronic use. Anti-depressant drugs are also sometimes administered to treat anxiety, but their beneficial effects only occur after several weeks of treatment.

Sounds almost too good to be true and if it isn’t it’ll probably cost enough to cause some more anxiety from people suffering from anxiety disorders who cannot afford to pay for it. Self diagnosis is always iffy, but while I’m not continuously anxious, it comes and goes. Its not like fear, its a combination of restlessness and apprehension. The feeling that something is off, something might happen. You think a change of scenery would help, but leave and wherever you go, once you get there, wish you were someplace else. I guess since my anxiety isn’t constant or all that severe I’ve learned to just accept it, like a passing mood. Though if they start making magic little pills that would let me skip anxiety all together that might be worth standing in line for.

Unparalleled and Denied

In an appalling 5-to-4 ruling on Thursday, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority tossed aside compelling due process claims, the demands of justice and a considered decision by a lower federal appeals court to deny the right of prisoners to obtain post-conviction DNA testing that might prove their innocence.

[   ]….Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. noted the “unparalleled ability” to prove guilt or innocence using DNA evidence. But he treated that breakthrough more as an irritant than an opportunity.

[   ]…As Justice Stevens noted in his dissent, “There is no reason to deny access to the evidence and there are many reasons to provide it.”

The conservative members of the court are merely concerned about the excessive energy and expense. The criminal justice systems has had a trial, the defendant has received a free bright orange jump suit and meals, and now new evidence comes along. Where does it end. So maybe he or she is innocent. Who can say really in this complicated world who is really guilty or innocent. What’s a few so called wrongly convicted and imprisoned people compared to all the hassle of a redo.

World’s hungry top one billion: UN food agency

A record one billion people are undernourished around the world, the UN food agency said Friday, blaming the global financial crisis for a surge of more than 100 million hungry since last year.

[  ]…Josette Sheeran, head of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), recalled food riots in several developing countries in the past two years and warned at the same news conference: “A hungry world is a dangerous world.”

In Western Civilization survey classes they tend to concentrate on the political or religious reasons for revolutions, but the French Revolution, among others was propelled as much by empty stomachs as lofty rhetoric about democracy.
