Boys who carry a particular variation of the gene Monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), sometimes called the “warrior gene,” are more likely not only to join gangs but also to be among the most violent members and to use weapons, according to a new study from The Florida State University that is the first to confirm an MAOA link specifically to gangs and guns.
Findings apply only to males. Girls with the same variant of the MAOA gene seem resistant to its potentially violent effects on gang membership and weapon use.
[ ]…”While gangs typically have been regarded as a sociological phenomenon, our investigation shows that variants of a specific MAOA gene, known as a ‘low-activity 3-repeat allele,’ play a significant role,” said Beaver, an award-winning researcher who has co-authored more than 50 published papers on the biosocial underpinnings of criminal behavior.
One issue that a reader might have with studies like this is the possibility of a little creeping eugenics bias on the part of the researcher. Then, while the researcher might have done an exemplary job of keeping such biases out of the study, there are usually a few readers that will use such information as further “proof” of their biases.
One issue that is readily apparent is down playing the role of the same gene variant in female gang members. Female gang membership is up. Female gang members are generally willing to use as much violence as male gang members. Female gang membership has a slightly more complicated dynamic. They’re more willing to commit violence against each other as proof of toughness. Female gang members also have to deal with the same issues of unintended pregnancy as non-gang females. Positive role models at school and a nurturing family environment tend to sway many young women from joining gangs, so we cannot dismiss socio-economic factors. Assigning any behavior as purely biological or environmental, has been and will continue to be shaky ground.
I’m not question begging or being rhetorical when I ask if, now that it is known there is a high probability that there is a specific gang/warrior gene should society decide that we might be just in having the criminal justice system perform medical gene therapy on those with the gene in order to change behavior. If we move as a society toward making such decisions – criminal justice involving medical procedures as part of sentencing are we prepared to handle any unintended consequences that would entail monetary damages and further medical intervention.
GINGRICH: I am not a citizen of the world. I am a citizen of the United States because only in the United States does citizenship start with our creator. […] I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history. We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism.
Isn’t it the extreme Righties like Gingrich – a corrupt aduleterer by the way – stance that it is impossible for the U.S. to find common ground with Islam. Muslims are doctrinally very much against paganism, which they call a kafir or shirk ( a polytheist in particular). Gingrich, Huckabee and Oliver North ( famous for the Iran-Contra scandal in which he sold arms to the Iranians) and Muslims all now share a common paranoia about paganism. A recent follower of Gingrich’s christianist ways murdered someone they considered a pagan in an act of terrorism. So that’s two things America’s home grown extremists have to build on with their foreign counterparts. Gingrich is,as usual, being less then genuine. He’s speaking in Con-code. He means he is surrounded by people like former president and minister Jimmy Carter – intractably moderate Americans who do not put a a rightwing spin on everything in the Bible from Adam’s fall, to Jehovah’s bet with Satan in which Job was used as a game set piece. Humanity owes paganism some debt in that they played a large role in humanity’s intellectual development – in a step toward modern empiricism they asked questions about man’s role in the universe, how and why nature was the way it was and codified rules about things that Newt has personal experience, like hypocrisy and decadence.
