Move Over Mean Girls — Boys Can Be Socially Aggressive, Too

Society holds that when it comes to aggression, boys hit and punch, while girls spread rumors, gossip, and intentionally exclude others, a type of aggression that’s called indirect, relational, or social. Now a new analysis of almost 150 studies of aggression in children and adolescents has found that while it’s true that boys are more likely to engage in physical aggression, girls and boys alike take part in social aggression.

Boys are still more likely to be physically aggressive then girls. The study says that the physical aggression is usually related to ADHD and poor pro social skills (oops learned behavior). While gossip or indirect aggression is connected to problems such as poor self esteem and depression. They also mention that parents and teachers have continued to see the stereotypes of girls gossip, boys hit instead because pop culture perpetuates or reinforces that view of children. It doesn’t say in the study, but I wonder if adults aren’t missing the relational gossip behavior in boys because they express it differently and statistically are not as advanced in verbal skills as girls. This new research also reminded me of a study that I posted about before that strongly suggested that some gossip, at least in college age and older adults was healthy and even a social asset, Psst! Gossip may be good for you

The results, recently published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, showed that the nature of the gossip controlled whether it was passed on. People generally were willing to share damaging, negative personal information when it involved a same sex rival. And they’d happily pass on good news only if it was about a friend.

Anyone, and that would probably include everyone reading this has been a victim of gossip. So little wonder that the word has negative connotations. As with the little white lies we tell everyday its impossible to do away with all gossip. I understand that some behaviors are fine for adults and not for children, but why is gossip in children almost completely associated with emotional issues while, at least according to the Applied Social Psychology study it is pretty much an imperative social asset for adults if done within a  framework of rules.

lone survivor. poor form to call my own picture title poetic, but that is all it is. in evolutionary terms the genes of this tree have uniquely evolved to suit the tree to its environment. at no time did the tree slug it out with other trees or animals in order to live. it is not n example of herbert spencer’s notion of “survival of the fittest”.

Under the heading Evolution at the head spinningly absurd conservapedia is a picture of Adolf Hitler with this nonsense,

Adolph Hitler wrote the following evolutionary racist statement in Mein Kampf: “If nature does not wish that weaker individuals should mate with the stronger, she wishes even less that a superior race should intermingle with an inferior one; because in such cases all her efforts, throughout hundreds of thousands of years, to establish an evolutionary higher stage of being, may thus be rendered futile.” [1] Charles Darwin was also a racist.

Hitler was indeed a social Darwinist and a racist. Social Darwinism has nothing to do with the theory of evolution. evolution in no way promotes the social concept of survival of the fittest. social conservatives were the ones to inject their meanings and value judgments into a theory of science where Darwin himself found equality among all human beings. This is a detailed post on the same subject, about half way down,

Darwin despised the sociologist Herbert Spencer’s hypothesis that poor people were poor because of some trait, probably inherited, and that the rich therefore did not need to act charitably, or honorably to eradicate poverty.

Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf. “[  ]… I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews. I am doing the Lord’s work.” He used the same words in a speech he made at Reichstag in 1938.

“We call the eternal power that rules over us the Almighty or God or Fate or the Good Father, he who as the Ninth Symphony says, lives beyond the stars. We ask the Almighty to preserve the Führer, to give him strength and blessing, to favor his work, to increase our faith, to make our hearts steadfast and our souls strong, to give our people victory after its battles and sacrifices, to bring the times to fulfillment.” – Goebbels’ 1942 Speech on Hitler’s Birthday

Hitler and the Nazis were a lot of things, but they were not as a movement atheistic or rational.
