Wiring the brain - Scientists have created a simple new model of the human brain which reproduces the statistics of its complex network organization
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a simple mathematical model of the brain which provides a remarkably complete statistical account of the complex web of connections between various brain regions. Their findings have been published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
The brain shares a similar pattern of connections with other complex networks such as social networks and the world wide web. However, until now, it was not known what rules were involved in the formation of the human brain network.
Brain connections – routes taken by neurons, tend to prefer two kinds of optimization. One is the the short distance connections. Apparently the brain sees distance in way similar to a driver planning a route on a map. Shorter distances costs less and are faster. Though it is sometimes memories and events call upon the brain to make connections that seem similar to connections it has made previous, but located in distance regions. These latter regions, though more distant, had shared similar input or were indirectly linked for reasons that provided some long term benefit. nature seems to have a prejudice in favor of efficiency. Though since we do not really have a true alternative model – all higher animal brains have similar structures – it is difficult to say that the arrangement of the neurons and brain regions of are the best the universe has come up with.

A couple good responses to the frequently hilarious false outrage over one tweet by Hilary Rosen – who has apologized several time – Ann Romney should apologize!
Well, I’d like to demand that Ann Romney apologize to all women for equating the “struggle” of a wealthy mother who had full-time household help to that of a poor or working-class job-holding mother, who must choose between her job and her children when a child gets sick. How dare you, madam? Have you no shame? I’d like to demand that Mitt Romney apologize for his wife’s remarks, too. I’d like to hear every prominent Republican denounce Ann Romney for her heinous insensitivity to non-wealthy mothers who must work outside the home.
Both Romneys owe an apology to the nannies, housekeepers, chauffeurs, gardeners and delivery drivers who also helped raise their children and still aren’t getting credit. More here – Ann Romney Can’t Fix Mitt’s Women Problem
