footbridge at argenteuil (1872) by alfred sisley (October 30, 1839 – January 29, 1899). sisley was born in france of english parents. unlike his earliest works which were destroyed, this one hangs in Musee d’Orsay. when someone isn’t stealing it anyway.

1906 - There wasn’t much in the way of air travel so photographers resorted to kites to make aerial photographs.

1916 - General John J.”Black Jack” Pershing advanced American forces into Mexico to capture Pancho Villa after Villa had attacked a town in New Mexico. Villa had brutally assassinated 16 men who worked for a mining company. Pershing’s mission was stymied by an uncooperative Mexican federal government who would only allow them access to certain areas and by his own men who were more interested in the local cheap liquor and “easy” women then chasing Villa.

1966 - The year the Supreme Court gave us the Miranda decision. The average American might not know much about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but thanks to TV and movies they know their Miranda rights, …The person in custody must, prior to interrogation, be clearly informed that he or she has the right to remain silent, and that anything the person says may be used against that person in court; the person must be clearly informed that he or she has the right to consult with an attorney and to have that attorney present during questioning, and that, if he or she is indigent, an attorney will be provided at no cost to represent him or her.

Ernesto Miranda who the decision was named after had his initial conviction over turned, but was convicted again in a new trial. After being paroled Miranda was killed in a knife fight. Yes, his killer was Mirandized/read his rights when arrested.

2006 - Baghdad Still Burning is named as one of Time magazine’s photos of the year.
