Afghan Journalism Student Sentenced to Death for Reading About Women’s Rights

A young man, a student of journalism, is sentenced to death by an Islamic court for downloading a report from the internet. The sentence is then upheld by the country’s rulers. This is Afghanistan — not in Taliban times but six years after “liberation” and under the democratic rule of the West’s ally, Hamid Karzai.

Since so many people in the U.S. see democracy as something very simplistic along the lines of majority rule is it any wonder that those nations that have democracy shoved down their throat also perceive democracy as simple majority rule. Democracy as something deliberate with checks on abuse by a zealous majority is probably an obscure concept to many in Afghanistan. This student does seem to represent the possibility that some people there are ready for for a little enlightenment. Whether they’re get a chance to pursue a more rational based society between dodging bullets and the iron hand of the local cleric based courts is another matter.

matrix apartments. so as not to add to all the myths associated with the movie the photo, especially after some PS manipulation reminded me of the look of the matrix. most of that movie was filmed on a studio lot at fox studios in sydney, australia and mixed with artist mat renderings so its mood and architectural motif is difficult to pin an absolute label. like many sets in the movie these apartments (which i cannot identify as yet) have mix of qualities including art nouveau, film noir, art deco and japanese illustration.
