we shouldn’t take coulter or malkin too seriously, civilization x, mending wall
October 14, 2007 at 5:50 am | In culture, literature, news, photography, photoshop, politics |Why Coulter is Better Than Malkin
Unlike Coulter, Malkin is on board with the movement. She’s a true believer. And she believes in herself as well — she (subjectively) sees herself as having journalistic integrity, dedication to facts, etc. That’s why she’s gone off the deep end with this SCHIP stuff. The pushback has touched a nerve and it’s clearly getting to her. If Malkin only cared about stirring up outrage, she wouldn’t be this upset.
Coulter, by contrast, is smarter and far smoother. She couldn’t care less about any pushback — she wants the pushback. That’s why it’s rarer to see Coulter engage in defensive, rage-filled rambling. Attacks don’t make her mad — even if she’s factually wrong. She’s not a believer in the cause, or her journalistic integrity — she’s an entertainer. Malkin, however, does care on some level. She craves to be respected. And she knows on some level that she’s been knocked down on the canvas — and she’s deeply embarrassed. But, she’s decided to double down rather than acknowledge the mistake and move on to other battles. It’s as if she were the commander-in-chief or something.
The complete post is well worth the read if you can spare the time. Once and a while I luck out and find a blog post or news article that covers the same issue that I had been thinking about. I think publius at Obsidian Wings gets it about right. It has even crossed my mind a couple of times after watching the extremely right-wing Coulter, and this may seem ridiculous. That maybe she leans liberal in some ways. At least a cultural liberal. There are plenty of reasons to think she is a act. A kind of walking parody of conservatism. Just in the past few weeks she had said that women shouldn’t have the right to vote and while she writes for a right of center Jewish publication she claimed that Christians were superior and Jews need to be “perfected”. You know that a good part of the Conservative movement just threw up in their mouths a little. Republican stalwarts like Elizabeth Dole, Olympia Snow, Laura Bush and religious Conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly. Many Conservatives, most Independents and Libertarians don’t want to be associated with the outrageous garbage that Coulter lets fly. She is probably a contributing factor to why over the last six years there have been so many defections from the Conservative movement.

Mending Wall
SOMETHING there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
