bicycle with stand in Uganda

I just thought this was a good start the new week photo. Some color, but muted. I noticed a few things about the bicycle that stand out. The large unwieldy buildt in stand. The seat springs which remind me of an old beach cruiser bike I used to have and are probably a welcome relief where there are lots of unpaved roads. Then there is the absense of a wheel lock. Either bicycle thief isn't a problem or the owner is very trusting.

The Saddest Thing I Own

There are some Mexicam wrestling dolls on the front page as I write this and that is sad. Much sadder then the Netflix left by a friend. I'll confess to the second saddest thing I own. A 6 year old teddy bear still in a protective bag that I bought for someone and let's just say that things didn't work out by the time the special occassion came around to give it as a gift. I can't in good conscience give it to someone else because of the story behind it and I can't bring myself to throw it away, so its in the top of a closet.

In case that was depressing and it wasn't meant to be, The Happiness Formula is a BBC site that investigates all things happiness related. Wealth, friendships, positive outlook, etc. While happiness is preferred over sadness, it strikes me that sometimes people/society puts too much pressure on others to be happy. Then when someone might have a good reason not to be happy, they feel guilty for being unhappy.

Baghdad ER

The HBO Special Baghdad ER gives a tiny glimpse as to what it's like. The documentary follows the events in the emergency room of the 86th Combat Support Hospital, or CaSH as they call it, in Baghdad's Green Zone during a two-month period last year. It is raw, it is graphic, it is heartbreaking. The film is politically neutral, and for the most part the soldiers seem supportive of US efforts in Iraq. But one trauma surgeon summed up a possible explanation for that perspective when he said "I have to believe we're doing some good, otherwise, this is sheer madness."
